Follow Up to the Sports Awards Evening

The Sports Awards Evening went very well with our guests Christine Ohutuogu 2008 Olympic Gold Medallist and Anyika Onuora the 100 meters sprinter, team GB at the Olympics. The Girls did a great job. The students recieved awards ranging from netball ,trampolining, football badminton and much more.

Some of our students put on a Gymnastics display and an ex student Emille Thomas did Street Dance which went down very well.

We would like to congratulate the PE department on a very slick evening.

In a celebration of the sports achievements of the students of The Sanders Draper School and Specialist Science College, the Physical Education Department will be holding their fifth annual awards evening.

Awards are presented for a wide range of sports, for example, football, cricket, rugby, cross country, indoor rowing, athletics, basket ball and badminton.

This year we have two sporting personalities as our VIP guest they are Olympic Gold Medallist Christine Ohuruogu and West Ham player and ex-student Freddie Sears.

We wish them all a fantastic evening.

Point Blank Showcase

Well done to our students who took part in the showcase.

Some of the students took part in Tune and Lyrics and some took part in Street Dancing to a very professional standard.

Our thanks also goes to Mr Shamsi for all his help and support in getting the students to this level they all achied a grade 2.

Dear Parents and Carers,

I am writing to remind you of the School INSED day on Friday 24^th October. The details of all our INSED days are published on our school calendar, on the website, and in the students’ Planners. Students should return to school at the normal time on Monday, 3^rd November.

On Thursday 23^rd October, there will be a non uniform day for all students. The money that we raise will go towards fund raising for our link school Celia Sanchez Manduley High School in Cuba. Unfortunately, at the beginning of term we received news that our link school was severely damaged by Hurricane IKE. All of the classrooms were damaged and equipment and resources were lost in the storms. We have a number of plans for fund raising after half term. You may have been asked to contribute to the ‘Pennies for Pesos’ activity which has started in the Year 8 tutor groups.

I am sorry to report that we have received a number of complaints from members of the public this half term about the behaviour of students on the buses – before and after school. Some individuals have been identified and their parents have been informed. Unfortunately, this does seem to be a problem on the 252 and 256 buses. Poor behaviour by students in public damages the reputation of the school. Please support us in affirming our Code of Conduct.

Unfortunately, there have also been complaints about some students’ behaviour at lunchtime in Hornchurch. As a result, after half term on Tuesday 4^th November the gates will be shut at lunchtime for all students. The school policy is that Year 11 students have the privilege to leave the site. Any other students who leave at lunchtime should be going home for lunch. On Tuesday 4^th November, no students will be allowed to leave the school site – food in the canteen will be available for students or you may provide a packed lunch

Finally, thank you for your support this term. I know that a number of our parental workshops and meetings have been well attended and have proved to be a valuable source of information and advice for many parents and carers.

Black History Month/ Havering Chef Cookery Demonstration

In celebration of black history month the Food Technology department invited Nick Gunyon (Chef Lecturer) and Mark Smithers (Hospitality Curriculum Manager) from Havering College to carry out a professional cookery demonstration and taste testing session. On the menu was a West Indian squash and plantain curry served with rice and peas and an Indian chicken Korma with braised basmalti rice. All pupils involved were very impressed to see professional chefs at work and enjoyed the taste testing immensely!

Maths. Year 10 Fast Track GCSE

The Sanders Draper School Year 10 Fast Track maths class sat their GCSE Maths exam in June 2008, a year early. All of them passed with grades A* to B.

Dear Parents/Carers,

I am writing to remind all parents and visitors to our school site that the school gates are closed from 8.45 a.m. – 9.00 a.m. and 2.55 p.m. – 3.20 p.m. daily during term times.

There are 1,155 pupils accessing both Suttons Primary and Sanders Draper Schools, along with many younger pre-school siblings daily and I am sure that you would agree that their safety is paramount.

The staff who close the gates are doing their job and I would kindly request that you do not speak to them regarding queries or concerns in connection with gate closures but address these to either myself or Mrs Augustin, Suttons Primary School, respectively. The car park is reserved for staff and visitors attending meetings and should not be used as a drop off point.

We will continue to encourage parents and children to walk, scooter or cycle to school as part of our healthy lifestyles initiative. Thank you for helping keep our community safe.

Open Evening - Follow Up

Open Evening proved to be a great success with a record number of families visiting the school on the night, and a futher 50 families who could not attend and asked for a tour of the school later.

Dear Parents and Carers,

Open Evening 2008

As you will no doubt be aware, the evening of Thursday, 18th September is our Open Evening for the parents of students currently in Year 6 of local Primary schools. This is an opportunity to see The Sanders Draper School at our best.

As usual, there will be some early closures at the beginning of term to assist in the organisation of Open Evening on Thursday 18th September. School will close after lesson 4 on Wednesday 17th September with a registration at 1.15 p.m. and after lesson 4 on Thursday 18^th at 1.15 p.m. On Friday 19^th September school will start for students with registration at 9.45 a.m. followed by lesson 2.

For parents new to the school, I should explain that the invitation to Open Evening, due to sheer volume of numbers, is made only to prospective parents with children transferring to secondary school in September 2009. Parents of current students (without children in Year 6) will have other opportunities to visit the school.

Only students involved in Open Evening should be on site on Thursday evening, and must be dressed in the correct school uniform (not summer uniform, please). Your child should have brought a letter home requesting your permission to act as guide or support in subject areas around the school. Students helping with Open Evening should report for duty at 6.00 p.m. We anticipate that the Open Evening will end at 9.00 p.m. You may collect your child from school at that time – they will be waiting for you in the Main Hall.
